What is the difference between cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting?

  • What is the difference between cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting?

The power of a clean workspace should never be underestimated.

Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting is crucial in a work environment.

As the manager or owner of a business, it’s your responsibility to ensure your premises receives the proper cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting care to keep it running in safe mode.

Cleanliness at any business is important for several reasons,  let’s face the facts that clients, employees, supplies and business partners are influenced and impacted by your environment every minute they are there.

Not only is a clutter-free workspace important, but so is having a clean, dirt-free space. Germs run rampant through the workplace if common areas are not sanitised, such as break rooms, reception, sales area, and doors knobs.

Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting the business space must be done consistently to be productive with an increase in the overall well-being of the public.

With all this being saying, do you know what’s the difference between them?

Cleaning

Means physically removing germs (bacteria and viruses), dirt and grime from surfaces using a detergent and water solution.

As you can see, cleaning contributes favourably to our health because the allergens and microorganisms are being removed. The problem, however, is the risk of cross-contamination.

The mopping solution, cleaning tools and the cleaning procedure (like using the same cloth in the bathroom on the kitchen bench) could be spreading disease in the absence of an antimicrobial.

it’s important to use different cloths and equipment for different areas. Using colour coded cloths can be an effective way of ensuring bacteria is not spread from one area or surface to another.

Sanitising

Sanitising a surface involves removing germs and reducing microorganisms by 99.9% but you are not doing anything  about viruses and fungus.

Although it’s wise to sanitise all surfaces on a regular basis, certain areas will require more frequent sanitisation than others. High-traffic touch-points like doorknobs and light switches that are regularly exposed to bacteria.

When sanitising a surface, be sure to follow any instructions given on cleaning equipment or sanitisers.

Any liquid sanitisers need to be mixed at the instructed concentration (too weak and they’ll be ineffective at banishing germs, too strong and they may be dangerous or damaging).

Some sanitisers need to be left on the surface for a particular period of time. Cleaning them off too soon could prevent them from working effectively.

You usually need to leave the disinfectant on the surfaces and objects for a certain period of time to kill the germs.

Disinfection

Effective disinfection and infection prevention is a step by step process.

Cleaning and disinfection go hand in hand, you simply cannot achieve high disinfection and sterilisation of any area unless a thorough cleaning is performed prior.

Disinfecting a surface will enable you to destroy almost 99.99% of disease-causing germs, bacteria and viruses within a matter of minutes.

Although it may seem as though there’s little distinction between sanitising and disinfecting in terms of outcome, the few hundredths of a percent can make a big difference.

Disinfectants will be inactivated by the presence of organic matter (dirt) on surfaces no matter how the product is applied.

It’s imperative in any setting that cleaning is carried out before disinfection in order for it to be effective.

We believe that education is key when it comes to this incredibly important subject, always ask your cleaning service provider about their processes.

By utilising a proven action plan of cleansing + sanitising + disinfection, surfaces can be efficiently disinfected preventing the spread of harmful viruses.

The importance of developing and implementing preventative strategies to effectively stop the spread of viruses is critical to us all.

Together we can work together in creating a healthier Australia!
